Maulana Mamunul Haque has been remanded in custody for seven days

 Hefazat-e-Islam central joint secretary general Maulana Mamunul Haque has been remanded in custody for seven days.

 Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Devdas Chandra Adhikari granted the remand on Monday.

Investigating officer of the case Mohammadpur Police Station SI Sajedul Haque produced Mamunul Haque in court at 11:30 am and applied for a seven-day remand.

Earlier, he was arrested from Jamia Rahmania Arabia Madrasa in Mohammadpur around 1pm on Sunday.

After the arrest, he was taken to the office of the Deputy Commissioner of Police, Tejgaon Division, Mohammadpur College Road. From there to Tejgaon police station. Harun Aur Rashid, deputy commissioner of Tejgaon division, told reporters at his office that a sabotage case was registered at Mohammadpur police station in 2020.

He (Mamunul Haque) has been arrested after finding clear evidence of involvement in the incident. Besides, there are many cases against Hefazat including planned attack on police, assault on police station and vandalism. These cases are being investigated.

It may be mentioned that Mamunul Haque came to the discussion at a function in Dhaka in November last year to publicly oppose the installation of the sculpture of Bangabandhu.

In the midst of various discussions and criticisms, a sculpture of Bangabandhu under construction was vandalized in Kushtia in December. A sedition case was filed in a Dhaka court against Amir Junaid Babungari of Hefazat-e-Islam and Joint Secretary General Mamunul Haque for opposing and vandalizing the sculpture.

In March, on the occasion of the golden jubilee of Bangladesh's independence, violence broke out in different parts of the country including Dhaka, Chittagong and Brahmanbaria in protest of Narendra Modi's visit. A case was filed against 18 people, including Mamunul Haque, in connection with the sabotage at the Baitul Mukarram National Mosque in Dhaka on the day of Subarna Jayanti. Among them, Mamunul Haque came to the discussion again after being blocked along with a woman on April 3 at a resort in Narayanganj Sonargaon. However, the Hefazat leader claimed that the woman was his second wife.

Police have arrested at least eight key leaders of the group so far.

Among them, Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Police (DB) arrested Junaid Al Habib, central joint secretary general of the organization and president of Dhaka Metropolitan, from Baridhara Madrasa on Saturday night. Central Assistant Secretary General Maulana Jalal Uddin Ahmed was arrested at noon on the same day.

Earlier, on the afternoon of April 17, Hefazat leader Jubayer Ahmed was arrested from Lalbagh area. The central leader of the organization Sakhawat Hossain was arrested from Lalbagh area on the evening of April 14. Mufti Sharifullah, joint publicity secretary of the central committee, was arrested from Mir Hazirbagh area of ​​Jatrabari on the night of April 13. Azizul Haque Islamabadi, the central organizing secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam, was arrested from Chittagong on April 11. He was arrested in 2013 in a case of violence at Shapla Chattar.
