'I unconditionally withdraw my statement': Nupur Sharma after being suspended from BJP for comments on Prophet

Soon after being suspended from the BJP, Nupur Sharma unconditionally withdrew her remarks that she had made on Prophet Muhammad. In a statement, she said for the past many days 'Mahadev' was being insulted and disrespected continuously. "It was mockingly being said that it was not 'Shivling' but a fountain.

The (Gyanvapi) Shivling was also ridiculed by comparing it to roadside signs and poles in Delhi," she said.

"I could not tolerate this continuous insult and disrespect towards our Mahadev and I said some things in response to it.

If my words have caused discomfort or hurt religious feelings of anyone whatsoever, I hereby unconditionally withdraw my statement. It was never my intention to hurt anyone's religious feelings," Sharma said.

There have been protests by Muslims against Sharma and the BJP for her comments on Prophet Muhammad.

The BJP's Central Disciplinary Committee (CDC) today suspended Sharma for expressing views 'contrary to the party's position'. The BJP also expelled party's Delhi media head Naveen Kumar Jindal for similar offence. He also said that his remarks were not aimed at hurting religious sentiments of any community.

Earlier in the day, the BJP said that it respects all religions and strongly denounces insult of any religious personalities of any religion. "The BJP is also strongly against any ideology which insults or demeans any sect or religion. The BJP does not promote such people or philosophy," it said.

After the saffron party suspended Sharma, former Jammu and Kashmir CM and NC leader Omar Abdullah said that the move was aimed at an international audience as there was strong reaction in Arab world.

"There is a context to the BJP suddenly waking up to denounce “insult to any religious personalities of any religion” and it has nothing to do with having offended the sentiments of lakhs of Muslims in India. This apology of a statement is aimed at an international audience," he said.
