Motorola's unused Edge 30 Ultra phone packs a 200-megapixel camera and revives in 7 minutes

Motorola has revealed an all-singing, all-dancing new flagship phone with a 200-megapixel camera – a first in a smartphone. This ludicrous sensor boasts roughly 4x the resolution of the newly-announced iPhone 14 Pro. And that's not all, the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra also sports 125W Turbo Charging (fast enough to top-up the handset with enough battery for a full day in 7 minutes, the firm says), the latest Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 system-on-a-chip from Qualcomm, 144Hz high refresh-rate screen, and Dolby Atmos-tuned speakers.

But let's not kid ourselves, the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra is all about that record-breaking camera.

Although the camera shoots 200-megapixel photos, you won't be posting these detail-packed files direct to your Instagram feed. Instead, the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra combines the detail packed into the original image into a more manageable 12.5-megapixel image. For those who can't do the maths, that's 16 pixels from the original image for every 2.56μm Ultra Pixel in the final shot. This process, dubbed "Pixel Binning", is becoming a standard practice within the industry as it offers high-quality, detailed shots ...but doesn't leave phone owners lumbered with humongous file sizes and skyrocketing mobile data bills when they try to back-up files to the cloud.

All of the extra data captured from the 200-megapixel sensor should result in bright, crisp images packed with detail ...even in the gloom, Motorola says. At 12-megapixel, the final photo is still small enough that sending over 4G and 5G networks, uploading to social media, and backing up to the cloud won't take all evening.

Motorola has fitted Optical Image Stabilisation (OIS) to the main sensor, which is designed to eliminate unwanted shakes from your hand. This quashes any unwanted wobble when filming and eliminates blur when using long exposures, like the built-in night mode.

Video footage gets a boost from the upgraded sensor too, with up to 8K video footage capture – a total of 33 million pixels of resolution, the highest video resolution possible on a smartphone today. If you haven't got an 8K video in your living room (or don't plan on cropping into the shot), Motorola has also equipped the camera with a more standard 4K HDR10+ video recording, which meets strict HDR10+ standards for colour accuracy, colour range, brightness, and contrast, to pack the videos with over a billion shades of colour.

The Edge 30 comes equipped with a 50-megapixel ultra-wide camera and a 2x telephoto lens, which can be used for Portrait Mode images and lossless zoom. The triple-camera system also boasts a dedicated macro photography mode. And on the front, Motorola has fitted a 60-megapixel front-facing camera for high-quality selfies and video calls.

Elsewhere, the Motorola Edge 30 Ultra ships with a notification feature, dubbed Edge Lights. This sees the edges of the handset, which curve from both the front and the back – making it feel thinner in your hand, illuminate in different ways to inform you know about a new notification from an app, an incoming call, or alarm. With a choice of five colour options to differentiate between notifications, a quick glance should be able to telly you whether you need to pick-up your phone (or not).

Motorola Edge 30 Ultra ticks off the other boxes we'd expect from a top-tier phone competing with the latest from Apple, Samsung and Google, including reverse-wireless charging to top-up any Qi-compatible wireless earbuds from the back of the handset, the latest Wi-Fi 6E wireless connectivity for a speedy (and reliable) connection, 12GB of fast LPDDR5 RAM and 256GB of built-in storage, and a 144Hz high refresh-rate touchscreen for smoother system animations and fast-paced gameplay

The Edge 30 Ultra is available in two colours, Interstellar Black and Starlight White. It starts from £749.99 and is available to buy from Currys, Carphone Warehouse, ID Mobile, Amazon UK, Argos, John Lewis & Partners, and motorola.co.uk today.
