Translation feature in new update of Threads
Social media giant Meta has rolled out a new update to the iOS version of the Threads app.
TechCrunch described it as the first "significant update" of Threads, although it was the second update two weeks after its debut.
According to Threads developer Cameron Roth, this update adds the much-awaited 'Translator' feature along with some minor changes.
Although the app has been launched in most countries around the world, Threads has yet to enter the European market. TechCrunch cited the ongoing dispute with the EU over Metar's ad business and customer data protection as the reason for the report.
The ability to translate posts into foreign languages is important to any international social media platform. However, TechCrunch says that in their experience, the company's other app, Instagram, doesn't translate well in some languages.
Beyond translation, a new 'Followers tab' has been added to the Threads activity feed. As good as it sounds, it's actually not. Because, it will show only recent threads followers.
The latest update to Threads has brought some changes to the app's activity feed. Apart from being able to subscribe to unfollowed accounts, it can also view the user's Instagram follower list.
Roth says the user may have to restart the app or wait until the end of the day for the new update to run.
While Threads is user-friendly as a new social media app, it still lacks a number of features that consumers may find essential.
For example, there is supposed to be no option to use alt text, which has been objected to by several Threads users.
Twitter's rival apps Mastodon and BlueSky already have alternative text facilities for image descriptions. It is now considered the minimum standard for app design.
Since its inception, Threads users have demanded a feed where only the content of people they follow can be seen. But the plethora of content from various top brands is not able to keep the users interested.
